Rockfest Band Review: Black Stone Cherry
Posted by akmarston on June 20, 2007

One of the highlights of Rockfest for me was to see a new band called Black Stone Cherry. They are a hard rocking southern band from Kentucky. When they hit the stage, they let all that southern stuff fly out the window and completely rocked out – complete with head banging and hair tossing. I can’t remember the last time I saw a Flying V guitar in use, but damned if they didn’t crank it out!

The first time I heard “Lonely Train,” on the radio, I about flipped. It is THAT good of a song. If you have not heard it yet…DEAR GOD MAN, DOWNLOAD THE THING!! They may be young, but they can flat out play.
Anyway, I made it over to the second stage to hear them play and they did NOT disappoint at all! In fact, it solidified their position as one of my new favorite bands. They busted right out of the gates with “Rain Wizard.” and plowed right on through a set designed to pull the audience into their unique sound. Of course they played “Lonely Train,” and they did “Rollin’ On” which is my favorite song off their debut CD. The rest of it is unfortunately a blur (too many people, trying to catch up with Marcus, etc).
I even played the CD for my Oldest Daughter (age 12) and she loved it. She even asked for a couple of the songs to be put on her iPod. So there ya go…it passes the test!
The band is: Chris Robertson – vocals/guitar • Ben Wells – guitar/vocals Jon Lawhon – bass/vocals • John Fred Young – drums
